Dr. John Thoppil is the founder and lead physician of River Place OB/GYN. A nationally recognized expert in women’s health, he has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CBS National News, and various state publications, including the Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly.
Clinically, Dr. Thoppil is a pioneer in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. He was the first physician in Texas to perform in-office uterine removal using the MYOSURE technique, and the first in the state to offer the SONATA procedure in-office for the treatment of fibroids.
He consistently maintains one of the lowest cesarean section rates in the state, with an NTSV rate of just 11% in 2022. River Place OB/GYN regularly cares for high-risk patients, including older mothers and those undergoing fertility treatment.
A respected leader in his field, Dr. Thoppil is a past President of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the current Department Chair of OB/GYN at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center—the busiest maternity hospital in Central Texas.
Dr. Thoppil earned his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, Magna Cum Laude with Foundation Honors and University Honors, from Texas A&M University. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he was named Ob/Gyn Student of the Year. He completed his residency training at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB, the Air Force’s flagship medical facility, earning academic awards each year of his training.
Before returning to his home state of Texas in 2008, Dr. Thoppil served his country as a physician in the United States Air Force.
He is married to Dr. Nimmi Thoppil and they have one son, John Jr. In his spare time, Dr. Thoppil enjoys cars, golf, and Texas A&M Aggie Football.
